mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school changed everything, and it has. it is a tipping point. reliably pro gun lobby senators have shifted position saying they can no longer bring themselves to oppose gun policies. republican commentator joe scarborough said sandy hook changed everything. president obama said, we can't tolerate this anymore, we must do better than this. so friday changed everything. for me, though, it was a shooting on the observation deck of oh the empire state building when my brother was shot. for others it was a school bus in chicago, or a parking lot in florida. for jim and sara brady, a day in 1981 changed everything, when jim stood behind the most well-trained armed guards with the president yet was still struck by gun violence that did change everything, it created two leaders of this movement, who rallied to demand the last important pieces of gun safety legislation we have had in this country and yet still, every day in america, everything changes for hundreds of more families. we're here because every year in america, 100,000 americans are shot, 30

to rebuild their homes. as we can see from hurricane katrina or hurricane sandy, when natural disasters happen the bureaucracy sometimes is hard to get through but mac specialized at that as a navy chief he did the same thing working as executive director of the ramona, california, chamber of commerce for four years. in this position he advocated for businesses and built lasting relationships across the region. but he wasn't a big business guy. he came out of the navy. the reason he was chosen for that position is he was great to be with, he knew how to get along with people of differing views and ideologies and thousand get things done. the v.f.w. said in their letter that one of his states -- straits was that -- traits was that he was always on duty. there was never a problem too small which did not dictate 100% of effort to have it corrected thofpblee day he died, mac was coming into my office because he was in the middle of case work for a constituent and didn't want to wait until he got back from christmas vacation. at his funeral, one of my constituents in v.f. -- and v.f.w. post

of the foreign intelligence surveillance act. the other is a relief package for those affected by hurricane sandy. you can follow live coverage of the senate on our companion network, c-span2. house members are on standby as negotiations continue on the so- called fiscal cliff. >host: we turn our attention to unemployment insurance and health benefits could be impacted. joining us is josh boak. when we are talking about unemployment insurance, what specific programs are talking about here? guest: unemployment insurance is a combination of federal and state program. usually last 62 weeks. it is that extension beyond that six months time frame that we are talking about as part of the fiscal cliff tops. that is what automatically expires. we know that it costs about $30 billion continuing those additional unemployment benefits. president obama said it is part of a deal that i want to make, those benefits should continue. the public has to take a firm stand. we have seen in the past that obama had to cut a deal in order to get those extensions. host: what specific benefits to these programs provide?
